An Open Letter from Rev. Clarence, 5/8/21

Dear Members and Friends of St. James,

Such updates as they are are centered on discussions of how we may meet diocesan guidelines for regathering for in-person liturgies. Our regathering shepherd/liaison, a member of St. John’s Church, Chelsea is, so I learn, acquainted with St. James and our area in Somerville. For that reason, although not voiced by him, he is excited that we are considering the next step in our Bishops’ “Journey By Stages.” (Also, a father, an active lay leader from a New Jersey diocese, whose son is a student at Tufts University, a mere 10-minutes walk away, is hopeful for a regathering now in September, as his son, also a lay leader, has expressed the absence of a community gathered in worship.)

Our regathering shepherd and I, in our discussions, are of one mind: We must remain sensitive to and respectful of those in our congregation who may have reservations about rejoining community worship. For that reason, we are being diligent, thorough, and mindful of directives and information from health authorities. With my updates to our senior warden, he and I hope soon to present to our vestry a detailed plan for regathering. This step is mandated by our Bishop-diocesan, in order that he is assured that parishioners are informed, and feel included in this weighty decision. I emphasize: We are not working under a deadline. No date for a first regathering has been determined. Information, outlining conditions under which we will reopen, will be distributed widely, e.g. per regular mail, email, Facebook, our website, and our local Somerville paper. As always your patience and prayers are desired. However, feel free always to contact me with your questions and suggestions. I do not cloak my excitement and enthusiasm for our parish as we consider this action.

I bid your prayer:

For the wonders of Easter
O God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as surpass our understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards you, that we, loving you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

For the Care of Children
Almighty God, heavenly Father, you have blessed us with the joy and care of children: Give us calm strength and patient wisdom as we bring them up, that we may teach them to love whatever is just and true and good, following the example of our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

For the sick and those who give aid to them
O merciful God, giver of life and health, send your blessing, we pray, upon all who are engaged in the ministry of healing. Grant that they be compassionate in their care for the sick and afflicted, fearless in their efforts to promote the health and well-being of the people in this and other lands, and be strengthened by your grace, for the sake of Him whose Cross is the pledge of victory over all powers of evil, even your Son our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen

The God of peace, who brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the eternal covenant make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well-pleasing in his sight, and may the blessing of God Almighty, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit be with you and those whom you love this day and for evermore. Amen
