Open Letter from Rev. Clarence, 1/23/23

Dear Members and Friends of St. James,

As the weather outside my study’s window takes on the appearance of winter, several thoughts of importance to our common life come to mind:

  • Because the winter season always brings an increase in contagious illnesses, e.g. the common cold, you are reminded that, should you feel ill, please consider refraining from in-person attendance at Eucharist.
  • Masking, though not required, is highly advised as this simple act reduces the transmission not only of Covid-19, but of other air-borne viruses. As indicated, neither our bishop nor our vestry has mandated this procedure. However, a face-covering, especially as we sing, is highly advised. I am please to announce, as I look out at the congregation that with rare exception, everyone is masked and maintains an appropriate distance. I am also pleased that members have been conscientious in acquiring all vaccinations/boosters against Coronavirus and variants.
  • Because of weather conditions and illnesses, meetings may be cancelled without much advanced notice. Such was the case on Sunday when, for lack of a quorum due to illnesses, the regularly scheduled meeting of the vestry was cancelled. Be assured that matters needing immediate attention continue to be addressed. It is the responsibility of clergy and warden, acting as an executive committee of the vestry, to maintain all matters essential to our ministry.
  • The ANNUAL MEETING of the Parish is warned for Sunday, 12 February. It is anticipated that this canonical and legal requirement will be conducted in person in St. Francis Hall. However, as winter, at least for now, seems to have returned, please note that we will always observe weather travel advisories. Your physical safety remains paramount.
  • As we move further and further away from the height of previous years of Covid-19 infestation and a return to normalcy, many like myself plead, until a new normal seems to set in, that we not forget to maintain contact with those in our congregation who are unable to attend Eucharist or may need assistance in “doing the ordinary things of life.”

Of your charity, I bid you pray for our national life, but especially for those who daily respond to those unknown to us who are in grave need or danger. We summarize our petitions in the voice of the Collect for the Third Sunday after the Epiphany:
Give us grace, O Lord, to answer readily the call of our Savior Jesus Christ and proclaim to all people the Good News of his salvation, that we and whole world may perceive the glory of his marvelous works; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

May the peace of God that passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the love of God and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, Father, Son and Holy Spirit be with you and those whom you love into this new year. Amen.

Your fellow Sojourner in The Way,
